Ideal Society: Proposals

Throughout history, people have dreamed of living in a perfect society, but they have not agreed on what an ideal society would be like. What do you think is the most important element of a perfect society in the modern world? How can people work towards achieving an ideal society.

Since antiquity, humanity has aspired to achieve an ideal society. Yet, opinions vary on the most essential characteristic of it. In this essay, the writer wishes to propose his view on the most fundamental element of such a society, and the measures which could be taken to fulfil this goal.

An indispensable element of a perfect society is egalitarianism. To illustrate, the pillar of an ideal social model is equality of opportunity for every member, including access to education, healthcare, and a merit-based employment system. This paradigm promotes social mobility, enabling those from disadvantaged backgrounds to escape poverty and enhance their social status without systemic barriers. Meanwhile, those with more privileged socioeconomic status are also compelled to compete rather than relying on their inherited status and connections. This competitive environment offers incentives to nearly all social strata, whether the wealthy or the impoverished, thus fostering a cohesive society while eroding inequality and nepotism.

To achieve such a goal, it is imperative for governments to implement tax reforms for the subsidization of tuition waiving programs and universal healthcare. A feasible approach is levying excises on luxury items, such as high-end smartphones, champagne, which are non-essential and predominantly consumed by the wealthy. With this measure, tax revenues from better-off residents could be diverted to fund inclusive public programs, which ensure equal opportunity for every member of society. Another complementary solution is inheritance tax, which targets the heirs of assets exceeding a certain threshold in value, to prevent unfair transfers of wealth and privileges across generations. Such measures would not only provide new opportunities for the underprivileged but also incentivize self-reliance among affluent individuals, who would no longer be able to depend solely on inherited assets.

In conclusion, creating a perfect society has been one of the most arduous journeys for mankind, with various views on how to achieve it. In the writer’s view, equal shares of opportunities play the fundamental role as it fosters competition, bolster the motivation of the poor, while reducing the unfair advantages of the rich. Achieving this vision requires deliberate taxation and redistribution policies aimed at funding services that empower all members of society, particularly those most in need.
